In the Chehalis School District, we believe that learning happens every single day—not just through grades and completed assignments, but through relationships, routines, and being part of our school community. Simply put, being present matters.

As we begin the school year, we want to share a joint message for all parents and students in grades 6-12 about our continued focus on improving student attendance and to ensure all families understand how attendance impacts learning. 

Often, attendance concerns are thought of only in terms of unexcused absences. However, excessive absences—whether excused or unexcused—can significantly affect student learning, connection, and long-term success.

Attached below is a visual that helps explain the difference between truancy and chronic absenteeism, and how schools are required to respond. This semester we will be reaching out to families of students who have more than 18 excused absences. If your child falls into the category of chronic absenteeism, a member of our team may reach out—not as a punishment, but as a way to partner with you and better understand how we can support your child in our schools.

We believe strongly in working with families. If there are barriers to regular attendance, we want to help problem-solve and connect you with available support.


State Attendance Information (RCW 28A.225.005)

Washington State law requires schools to inform families about:

  • The benefits of regular school attendance

  • The effects of excessive absenteeism on learning and long-term outcomes

  • School and family roles in supporting attendance

  • Available resources and supports

  • Compulsory education requirements and truancy processes

This information is shared annually to ensure families are informed and supported.
