This school year has started off at a sprint! We have accomplished so much in such a short time, but what I am most proud of is the role our students have played along the way. Before the year began, a group of students selected EMPOWER as our word for the year. Since then, we have worked to make that word more than just a theme by putting student voice at the center of our efforts to drive positive change at CMS.
Throughout October, approximately 120 students shared their thoughts on connection and belonging at CMS, and their responses were powerful. Students highlighted what helps them feel connected, from clubs and activities to something as simple as a teacher greeting them. They also identified two primary reasons students feel disconnected: unkindness and being left out. What stood out most was that students didn't just identify the challenges; they offered solutions. They recognized the importance of reaching out to those who may feel disconnected, whether by inviting someone to sit with them at lunch, standing up for a peer, or simply offering a smile and hello. As adults, we often focus on teaching students how to make a difference, but this month reminded us that our students already understand what needs to change and how to make it happen. Our job is to continue empowering them to lead that change.
Warmly,
